The 1st edition of this widely used atlas provided neuroanatomy students with high quality photographs of the gross brain and photomicrographs in a variety of planes through the spinal cord, brain stem, cerebellum, and cerebral hemispheres, all accompanied by informative line drawings. In the second edition, sections of the gross brain cut in the plane of computerized axial tomography were added.
Long awaited, this 3rd edition takes into account advances in computer-assisted brain-imaging techniques that do not restrict the plane of study, and progress in identifying and localizing putative neurotransmitters and neuromodulators in the brain. New sections present coronal views of the gross brain, magnetic resonance images, and computerized tomographic scans. Another new section depicts the relationship of selected neurotransmitters with neuroanatomical structures in the brain stem. Important nuclei with known neurotransmitters, such as the basal forebrain cholinergic system which includes the basal nucleus of Meynert, have been delineated in appropriate figures throughout the text As with previous editions, only the highest quality photomicrographs and drawings have been included.
