This Annotated Guide includes not only the Nursing Practice Act, but also Texas Board of Nursing (BON) practice-related rules, position statements, interpretive guidelines and policies and selected other laws and regulations relating to nursing. The nurse's practice must comply not only with the NPA, but also with BON rules as well as other laws and regulations relating to her or his specific practice setting. Patient rights laws are an example of the latter. In fact, BON rules and such other laws normally provide more detailed guidance to the nurse than the NPA itself. This Guide addresses only state laws and regulations. Federal laws and regulations may also affect the practice of nursing and nurses also need to be familiar with these as they relate to their specific practice setting. Examples of the latter would be the federal EMTALA and HIPAA laws governing patient transfers and privacy, respectively.
