Gerontological nursing is an evidence-based practice specialty "that addresses the full range of the needs of older adults as related to the aging process and specialized care. The gerontological nurse, through use of an extensive and robust body of skills and knowledge, leads inter-professional teams and collaborates with older adults and their significant others to promote autonomy, wellness, optimal functioning, comfort, and quality of life from healthy aging to end of life. Gerontological nurses were also the first to co-publish with the American Nurses Association the standards of a nursing speciality practice.
